14-1-001
वैशंपायन उवाच
कृतोदकं तु राजानं धृतराष्ट्रं युधिष्ठिरः
पुरस्कृत्य महाबाहुरुत्तताराकुलेन्द्रियः
Vaishampayana said: Yudhisthira, the mighty-armed one, having performed the water rites for King Dhritarashtra, led him out, with his senses agitated
14-1-002
उत्तीर्य च महीपालो बाष्पव्याकुललोचनः
पपात तीरे गङ्गाया व्याधविद्ध इव द्विपः
And the king, having crossed over, with eyes troubled by tears, fell on the bank of the Ganges like an elephant struck by a hunter.
14-1-003
तं सीदमानं जग्राह भीमः कृष्णेन चोदितः
मैवमित्यब्रवीच्चैनं कृष्णः परबलार्दनः
When he was sinking, Bhima, urged by Krishna, caught him. And Krishna, the destroyer of enemy armies, said to him, "Do not do this."
14-1-004
तमार्तं पतितं भूमौ निश्वसन्तं पुनः पुनः
ददृशुः पाण्डवा राजन्धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम्
Seeing him fallen on the ground, sighing again and again, the Pandavas saw King Yudhishthira, the embodiment of Dharma.
14-1-005
तं दृष्ट्वा दीनमनसं गतसत्त्वं जनेश्वरम्
भूयः शोकसमाविष्टाः पाण्डवाः समुपाविशन्
Seeing the lord of men, whose mind was despondent and whose spirit was gone, the Pāṇḍavas again sat down, overcome with grief.
14-1-006
राजा च धृतराष्ट्रस्तमुपासीनो महाभुजः
वाक्यमाह महाप्राज्ञो महाशोकप्रपीडितम्
And King Dhritarashtra, with his mighty arms, sat down before him, and the very wise one spoke these words to the one greatly afflicted by grief:
14-1-007
उत्तिष्ठ कुरुशार्दूल कुरु कार्यमनन्तरम्
क्षत्रधर्मेण कौरव्य जितेयमवनिस्त्वया
Arise, O tiger among the Kurus, perform the task that is to be done. O descendant of the Kuru lineage, by the duty of a kshatriya, this earth has been
14-1-008
तां भुङ्क्ष्व भ्रातृभिः सार्धं सुहृद्भिश्च जनेश्वर
न शोचितव्यं पश्यामि त्वया धर्मभृतां वर
Enjoy it with your brothers and friends, O Lord of men. I do not see any reason for you to grieve, O best of upholders of dharma.
14-1-009
शोचितव्यं मया चैव गान्धार्या च विशां पते
पुत्रैर्विहीनो राज्येन स्वप्नलब्धधनो यथा
O lord of the people, I and Gandhari must grieve, deprived of our sons and kingdom, like one who has obtained wealth in a dream.
14-1-010
अश्रुत्वा हितकामस्य विदुरस्य महात्मनः
वाक्यानि सुमहार्थानि परितप्यामि दुर्मतिः
Not having heard the words of the great-souled Vidura, who was desirous of my welfare, I am tormented by my evil mind at the very great meaning of those words.
14-1-011
उक्तवानेष मां पूर्वं धर्मात्मा दिव्यदर्शनः
दुर्योधनापराधेन कुलं ते विनशिष्यति
He, the one with the divine vision, the one with dharma in his soul, had previously told me: "Your family will be destroyed due to Duryodhana's crime."
14-1-012
स्वस्ति चेदिच्छसे राजन्कुलस्यात्मन एव च
वध्यतामेष दुष्टात्मा मन्दो राजा सुयोधनः
If you wish for the welfare of your family and yourself, O king, Let this evil-souled, wicked King Suyodhana be killed.
14-1-013
कर्णश्च शकुनिश्चैव मैनं पश्यतु कर्हिचित्
द्यूतसंपातमप्येषामप्रमत्तो निवारय
May Karna and Shakuni never see him. Be careful to prevent them from gambling.
14-1-014
अभिषेचय राजानं धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम्
स पालयिष्यति वशी धर्मेण पृथिवीमिमाम्
Anoint the king, the righteous Yudhishthira. He will rule this earth righteously.
14-1-015
अथ नेच्छसि राजानं कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्
मेढीभूतः स्वयं राज्यं प्रतिगृह्णीष्व पार्थिव
If you do not wish to have the king, Kunti's son Yudhishthira, Then yourself become the sacrificial altar and accept the kingdom, O king.
14-1-016
समं सर्वेषु भूतेषु वर्तमानं नराधिप
अनुजीवन्तु सर्वे त्वां ज्ञातयो ज्ञातिवर्धन
O king, who is impartial towards all beings, May all your relatives and kinsmen be supported by you, O increaser of kinsmen.
14-1-017
एवं ब्रुवति कौन्तेय विदुरे दीर्घदर्शिनि
दुर्योधनमहं पापमन्ववर्तं वृथामतिः
Thus spoke Vidura, the far-sighted one, to the son of Kunti. I, the sinful Duryodhana, followed him in vain.
14-1-018
अश्रुत्वा ह्यस्य वीरस्य वाक्यानि मधुराण्यहम्
फलं प्राप्य महद्दुःखं निमग्नः शोकसागरे
Not hearing the sweet words of this hero, I have attained great suffering and am immersed in the ocean of sorrow.
14-1-019
वृद्धौ हि ते स्वः पितरौ पश्यावां दुःखितौ नृप
न शोचितव्यं भवता पश्यामीह जनाधिप
For we see your parents, the aged, afflicted, O king. You should not grieve, for I see the lord of men here.
