2-1-001
वैशंपायन उवाच
ततोऽब्रवीन्मयः पार्थं वासुदेवस्य संनिधौ
प्राञ्जलिः श्लक्ष्णया वाचा पूजयित्वा पुनः पुनः
Vaiśampāyana said, In Vāsudeva's presence, Māyā joined his hands as a sign of respect and repeatedly worshipping him, spoke to Pārtha in flattering words,
2-1-002
अस्माच्च कृष्णात्संक्रुद्धात्पावकाच्च दिधक्षतः
त्वया त्रातोऽस्मि कौन्तेय ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते
"O Kaunteya! You have saved me from the angry Kṛṣṇā and the fire that desired to consume me. Please tell me what I can do for you."
2-1-003
अर्जुन उवाच
कृतमेव त्वया सर्वं स्वस्ति गच्छ महासुर
प्रीतिमान्भव मे नित्यं प्रीतिमन्तो वयं च ते
Arjuna replied: "O great āsura! You have done everything and can leave in peace. May you always be friendly towards us and may we always be friendly towards you."

मय उवाच
युक्तमेतत्त्वयि विभो यथात्थ पुरुषर्षभ
प्रीतिपूर्वमहं किंचित्कर्तुमिच्छामि भारत
Māyā said: "O illustrious one! O bull among men! What you have said is deserving of you. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! But as a token of my affection, I wish to do something for you.

अहं हि विश्वकर्मा वै दानवानां महाकविः
सोऽहं वै त्वत्कृते किंचित्कर्तुमिच्छामि पाण्डव
I am extremely wise, the Viśvakarma of the dānava-s. O Pāṇḍava! Therefore, I wish to do something for you."
2-1-006
अर्जुन उवाच
प्राणकृच्छ्राद्विमुक्तं त्वमात्मानं मन्यसे मया
एवं गते न शक्ष्यामि किंचित्कारयितुं त्वया
Arjuna replied: "You think that I have saved your life from instant death. But if that is the case, I cannot ask you to do anything.

न चापि तव संकल्पं मोघमिच्छामि दानव
कृष्णस्य क्रियतां किंचित्तथा प्रतिकृतं मयि
O Dānava! But I do not wish to stand in the way of your resolution either. Therefore, do something for Kṛṣṇā and that will be tantamount to doing something for me."
2-1-008
वैशंपायन उवाच
चोदितो वासुदेवस्तु मयेन भरतर्षभ
मुहूर्तमिव संदध्यौ किमयं चोद्यतामिति
Vaiśampāyana said: O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Thus urged by Māyā, Vāsudeva thought for an instant about what might be done for him.
2-1-009
चोदयामास तं कृष्णः सभा वै क्रियतामिति
धर्मराजस्य दैतेय यादृशीमिह मन्यसे
Having thought, Kṛṣṇā said, "O Daitya! Build a wonderful assembly hall for Dharmarāja that you think to be worthy of him,
2-1-010
यां कृतां नानुकुर्युस्ते मानवाः प्रेक्ष्य विस्मिताः
मनुष्यलोके कृत्स्नेऽस्मिंस्तादृशीं कुरु वै सभाम्
so that no one from the world of men can construct an assembly hall that is its equal, even as they gaze at it amazed.
2-1-011
यत्र दिव्यानभिप्रायान्पश्येम विहितांस्त्वया
आसुरान्मानुषांश्चैव तां सभां कुरु वै मय
O Māyā! Build an assembly hall in which we will see the designs of the gods, āsura-s and humans."
2-1-012
प्रतिगृह्य तु तद्वाक्यं संप्रहृष्टो मयस्तदा
विमानप्रतिमां चक्रे पाण्डवस्य सभां मुदा
Having heard these words, Māyā was delighted. He drew up a design for an assembly hall for the Pāṇḍava-s that was like a vimāna.
2-1-013
ततः कृष्णश्च पार्थश्च धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे
सर्वमेतद्यथावेद्य दर्शयामासतुर्मयम्
Then Kṛṣṇā and Pārtha told Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira everything that had happened and introduced Māyā to him.
2-1-014
तस्मै युधिष्ठिरः पूजां यथार्हमकरोत्तदा
स तु तां प्रतिजग्राह मयः सत्कृत्य सत्कृतः
Yudhiṣṭhira offered him the homage that he deserved. Māyā accepted and paid his respects in return.
2-1-015
स पूर्वदेवचरितं तत्र तत्र विशां पते
कथयामास दैतेयः पाण्डुपुत्रेषु भारत
O lord of the universe! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Then the daitya told Pāṇḍu's sons about the deeds of the gods in ancient times, in diverse places.

स कालं कंचिदाश्वस्य विश्वकर्मा प्रचिन्त्य च
सभां प्रचक्रमे कर्तुं पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम्
After resting for a while, Viśvakarma reflected and began to build an assembly hall for the great-souled Pāṇḍava-s.
2-1-017
अभिप्रायेण पार्थानां कृष्णस्य च महात्मनः
पुण्येऽहनि महातेजाः कृतकौतुकमङ्गलः
According to the wishes of the great-souled Kṛṣṇā and Pṛthā's sons, the immensely energetic one performed the initial rites on an auspicious occasion.

तर्पयित्वा द्विजश्रेष्ठान्पायसेन सहस्रशः
धनं बहुविधं दत्त्वा तेभ्य एव च वीर्यवान्
The valorous one honoured thousands of the best brāhmana-s, fed them pāyasa and donated a lot of riches to them.
2-1-019
सर्वर्तुगुणसंपन्नां दिव्यरूपां मनोरमाम्
दशकिष्कुसहस्रां तां मापयामास सर्वतः
He then measured out a divine and beautiful plot that was ten thousand kiṣku in every direction and was marked by all the good characteristics.
