जनमेजय उवाच
एवं निपातिते कर्णे समरे सव्यसाचिना
अल्पावशिष्टाः कुरवः किमकुर्वत वै द्विज
Janamejaya asked, 'O brāhmaṇa! In the battle, Karṇa was brought down by Savyasachi. What did the few Kuru-s who were left do then?
9-1-002
उदीर्यमाणं च बलं दृष्ट्वा राजा सुयोधनः
पाण्डवैः प्राप्तकालं च किं प्रापद्यत कौरवः
The army of the Pāṇḍava-s was swelling. On seeing this, what did Kaurava, King Suyodhana, do?
9-1-003
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं तदाचक्ष्व द्विजोत्तम
न हि तृप्यामि पूर्वेषां शृण्वानश्चरितं महत्
O supreme among brāhmana-s! I wish to hear all this in detail. I am not satisfied with listening to the great deeds of my ancestors.'
9-1-004
वैशंपायन उवाच
ततः कर्णे हते राजन्धार्तराष्ट्रः सुयोधनः
भृशं शोकार्णवे मग्नो निराशः सर्वतोऽभवत्
Vaiśampāyana replied: O king! When Karṇa was slain, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, Suyodhana, was immersed in an ocean of great grief. In every possible way, he lost all hope.
9-1-005
हा कर्ण हा कर्ण इति शोचमानः पुनः पुनः
कृच्छ्रात्स्वशिबिरं प्रायाद्धतशेषैर्नृपैः सह
He repeatedly grieved, "Āla-s! Karṇa! Āla-s! Karṇa!" With a great deal of difficulty, he went to his own camp, together with the remaining kings.
9-1-006
स समाश्वास्यमानोऽपि हेतुभिः शास्त्रनिश्चितैः
राजभिर्नालभच्छर्म सूतपुत्रवधं स्मरन्
Remembering the death of the son of a sūta, the king could find no peace of mind and was comforted by them, with citations from reasons given in the sacred texts.
9-1-007
स दैवं बलवन्मत्वा भवितव्यं च पार्थिवः
संग्रामे निश्चयं कृत्वा पुनर्युद्धाय निर्ययौ
The king eventually decided that destiny was supremely powerful. He made up his mind to fight and again emerged for the battle.
9-1-008
शल्यं सेनापतिं कृत्वा विधिवद्राजपुंगवः
रणाय निर्ययौ राजा हतशेषैर्नृपैः सह
The bull among kings made Śalya the commander, in accordance with the decreed rites. With the kings who had not been slain, the king emerged to do battle.
9-1-009
ततः सुतुमुलं युद्धं कुरुपाण्डवसेनयोः
बभूव भरतश्रेष्ठ देवासुररणोपमम्
An extremely tumultuous battle commenced between the soldiers of the Kuru-s and the Pāṇḍava-s. O best of the Bhārata lineage! It was like that between the gods and the āsura-s.
9-1-010
ततः शल्यो महाराज कृत्वा कदनमाहवे
पाण्डुसैन्यस्य मध्याह्ने धर्मराजेन पातितः
O great king! In the battle, Śalya created carnage among the Pāṇḍu soldiers and was slain by Dharmarāja at midday.
9-1-011
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा हतबन्धू रणाजिरात्
अपसृत्य ह्रदं घोरं विवेश रिपुजाद्भयात्
In the field of battle, all of King Duryodhana's relatives were slain. Terrified of his enemies, he fled and entered into a terrible lake.
9-1-012
अथापराह्णे तस्याह्नः परिवार्य महारथैः
ह्रदादाहूय योगेन भीमसेनेन पातितः
During the later part of the afternoon, he was surrounded by mahāratha-s. He was summoned from the lake and brought down by Bhīmasena, who used yoga.
9-1-013
तस्मिन्हते महेष्वासे हतशिष्टास्त्रयो रथाः
संरभान्निशि राजेन्द्र जघ्नुः पाञ्चालसैनिकान्
When that great archer was killed, three rāṭha-s remained alive. O Indra among kings! Overcome by rage, they slaughtered the Pāñcāla soldiers in the night.
9-1-014
ततः पूर्वाह्णसमये शिबिरादेत्य संजयः
प्रविवेश पुरीं दीनो दुःखशोकसमन्वितः
Next morning, Sañjaya left the camp and entered the city, distressed and overcome with grief.
9-1-015
प्रविश्य च पुरं तूर्णं भुजावुच्छ्रित्य दुःखितः
वेपमानस्ततो राज्ञः प्रविवेश निवेशनम्
He swiftly entered the city, raising his hands in sorrow. Trembling, he entered the king's abode.
9-1-016
रुरोद च नरव्याघ्र हा राजन्निति दुःखितः
अहो बत विविग्नाः स्म निधनेन महात्मनः
O tiger among men! In sorrow, he wept and said, "O king! Āla-s! The great-souled one has been killed and all of us are agitated.
9-1-017
अहो सुबलवान्कालो गतिश्च परमा तथा
शक्रतुल्यबलाः सर्वे यत्रावध्यन्त पार्थिवाः
Although it was not yet time, the extremely powerful one has attained the supreme objective. All the kings on our side were like Śākra in strength and they have been killed."
9-1-018
दृष्ट्वैव च पुरो राजञ्जनः सर्वः स संजयम्
प्ररुरोद भृशोद्विग्नो हा राजन्निति सस्वरम्
O king! On seeing Sañjaya in the city, all the people were extremely anxious and wept in loud voices, saying, "O king! Āla-s!"
9-1-019
आकुमारं नरव्याघ्र तत्पुरं वै समन्ततः
आर्तनादं महच्चक्रे श्रुत्वा विनिहतं नृपम्
O tiger among men! On hearing that the king had been killed, even the children surrounded the city from all sides and lamented loudly.
9-1-020
धावतश्चाप्यपश्यच्च तत्र त्रीन्पुरुषर्षभान्
नष्टचित्तानिवोन्मत्ताञ्शोकेन भृशपीडितान्
We saw three bulls among men running around there. They were deprived of their senses. They were mad with grief. They were severely afflicted.
9-1-021
तथा स विह्वलः सूतः प्रविश्य नृपतिक्षयम्
ददर्श नृपतिश्रेष्ठं प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमीश्वरम्
Entering, the distracted sūta saw the king, who was without decay. He saw the lord, best among kings, who had wisdom as his sight.
9-1-022
दृष्ट्वा चासीनमनघं समन्तात्परिवारितम्
स्नुषाभिर्भरतश्रेष्ठ गान्धार्या विदुरेण च
He saw that the unblemished one, foremost among the Bhārata lineage, was seated, surrounded by his daughters-in-law, Gāndhārī, Vidūra
9-1-023
तथान्यैश्च सुहृद्भिश्च ज्ञातिभिश्च हितैषिभिः
तमेव चार्थं ध्यायन्तं कर्णस्य निधनं प्रति
and other well-wishers, relatives and friends. He was thinking about Karṇa's death.
9-1-024
रुदन्नेवाब्रवीद्वाक्यं राजानं जनमेजय
नातिहृष्टमनाः सूतो बाष्पसंदिग्धया गिरा
O Janamejaya! In a voice that was choking with tears, and distressed in his mind, the sūta spoke these words to the king, weeping amidst the words.
9-1-025
संजयोऽहं नरव्याघ्र नमस्ते भरतर्षभ
मद्राधिपो हतः शल्यः शकुनिः सौबलस्तथा
उलूकः पुरुषव्याघ्र कैतव्यो दृढविक्रमः
"O tiger among men! O bull among the Bhārata lineage! I am Sañjaya. Śalya, the lord of Madra, and Śākuni Saubala have been slain. O tiger among men! So has Ulūka, firm in his valour and the son of the one who played with dice.
9-1-026
संशप्तका हताः सर्वे काम्बोजाश्च शकैः सह
म्लेच्छाश्च पार्वतीयाश्च यवनाश्च निपातिताः
All the saṃśaptaka-s have been slain, together with the Kāmboja-s and the Śāka-s. The mleccha-s, the ones from the mountainous regions and the Yāvana-s have been brought down.
9-1-027
प्राच्या हता महाराज दाक्षिणात्याश्च सर्वशः
उदीच्या निहताः सर्वे प्रतीच्याश्च नराधिप
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च सर्वतो निहता नृप
O great king! All those from the east and the south have been slain. O lord of men! All those from the north and the west have been killed. O king! All the kings and the princes have been killed.
9-1-028
दुर्योधनो हतो राजन्यथोक्तं पाण्डवेन च
भग्नसक्थो महाराज शेते पांसुषु रूषितः
O king! Pāṇḍava has killed Duryodhana, as he had said he would. O great king! With his thigh broken, he is lying down in the dust, covered with blood.
9-1-029
धृष्टद्युम्नो हतो राजञ्शिखण्डी चापराजितः
उत्तमौजा युधामन्युस्तथा राजन्प्रभद्रकाः
O king! Dhṛṣṭadyumna has been killed and also the unvanquished Śikhaṇḍī, Uttamouja and Yudhāmanyu. O king! The Prabhadraka-s,
9-1-030
पाञ्चालाश्च नरव्याघ्राश्चेदयश्च निषूदिताः
तव पुत्रा हताः सर्वे द्रौपदेयाश्च भारत
कर्णपुत्रो हतः शूरो वृषसेनो महाबलः
the Pāñcāla-s and the Cedi-s, tigers among men, are dead. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Your sons, all of Draupadī's sons, have been slain. The immensely strong and brave Vṛṣasena, Karṇa's son, has been killed.
9-1-031
नरा विनिहताः सर्वे गजाश्च विनिपातिताः
रथिनश्च नरव्याघ्र हयाश्च निहता युधि
All the men have been killed and the elephants have been brought down. O tiger among men! Rāṭha-s and horses have been slain in the battle.
9-1-032
किंचिच्छेषं च शिबिरं तावकानां कृतं विभो
पाण्डवानां च शूराणां समासाद्य परस्परम्
O lord! There are only a few who remain in your camp. Those brave ones and the Pāṇḍava-s clashed against each other.
9-1-033
प्रायः स्त्रीशेषमभवज्जगत्कालेन मोहितम्
सप्त पाण्डवतः शेषा धार्तराष्ट्रास्तथा त्रयः
They were confounded by destiny and only women are left in this world. There are seven left on the side of the Pāṇḍava-s and three on the side of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
9-1-034
ते चैव भ्रातरः पञ्च वासुदेवोऽथ सात्यकिः
कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च द्रौणिश्च जयतां वरः
There are the five brothers and Vāsudeva and Sātyaki. And there are Kṛpa, Kritavarma and Droṇa's son, supreme among victorious ones.
9-1-035
तवाप्येते महाराज रथिनो नृपसत्तम
अक्षौहिणीनां सर्वासां समेतानां जनेश्वर
एते शेषा महाराज सर्वेऽन्ये निधनं गताः
O great king! O supreme among kings! Those are the only rāṭha-s who are left. O lord of men! O great king! Out of the akṣauhiṇī-s that assembled, these are the only ones who are left. Everyone else has been killed.
9-1-036
कालेन निहतं सर्वं जगद्वै भरतर्षभ
दुर्योधनं वै पुरतः कृत्वा वैरस्य भारत
O bull among the Bhārata lineage! The entire world has been slain by destiny. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! With Duryodhana at the forefront, this was the result of the enmity."
9-1-037
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचः क्रूरं धृतराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः
निपपात महाराज गतसत्त्वो महीतले
O great king! Having heard these cruel words, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of men, lost his senses and fell down on the ground.
9-1-038
तस्मिन्निपतिते भूमौ विदुरोऽपि महायशाः
निपपात महाराज राजव्यसनकर्शितः
O great king! When he fell down on the ground, the immensely illustrious Vidūra was touched by the king's grief and also fell down.
9-1-039
गान्धारी च नृपश्रेष्ठ सर्वाश्च कुरुयोषितः
पतिताः सहसा भूमौ श्रुत्वा क्रूरं वचश्च ताः
O best of kings! On hearing those cruel words, Gāndhārī and all the Kuru women also suddenly fell down on the ground.
9-1-040
निःसंज्ञं पतितं भूमौ तदासीद्राजमण्डलम्
प्रलापयुक्ता महती कथा न्यस्ता पटे यथा
All the servant-maids in the king's circle also lost their senses and fell down on the ground. They were overcome by a great delirium, as if they were figures on a painting.
9-1-041
कृच्छ्रेण तु ततो राजा धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः
शनैरलभत प्राणान्पुत्रव्यसनकर्शितः
King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, lord of the earth, was overcome by a great hardship. He was afflicted by hardship on account of his sons and slowly regained his senses.
9-1-042
लब्ध्वा तु स नृपः संज्ञां वेपमानः सुदुःखितः
उदीक्ष्य च दिशः सर्वाः क्षत्तारं वाक्यमब्रवीत्
Having regained his senses, the king trembled in great grief. He glanced in all the directions and spoke these words to Kshatta.
9-1-043
विद्वन्क्षत्तर्महाप्राज्ञ त्वं गतिर्भरतर्षभ
ममानाथस्य सुभृशं पुत्रैर्हीनस्य सर्वशः
एवमुक्त्वा ततो भूयो विसंज्ञो निपपात ह
"O learned Kshatta! O immensely wise one! O bull among the Bhārata lineage! You are the refuge. I am in a grievous state, without a protector. I am without all my sons." Having said this, he lost his senses again and fell down.
9-1-044
तं तथा पतितं दृष्ट्वा बान्धवा येऽस्य केचन
शीतैस्तु सिषिचुस्तोयैर्विव्यजुर्व्यजनैरपि
On seeing him fall down in this way, his relatives sprinkled cold water on him. They fanned him with fans.
9-1-045
स तु दीर्घेण कालेन प्रत्याश्वस्तो महीपतिः
तूष्णीं दध्यौ महीपालः पुत्रव्यसनकर्शितः
निःश्वसञ्जिह्मग इव कुम्भक्षिप्तो विशां पते
After a long time, the lord of the earth was comforted. Oppressed by grief on account of his sons, the lord of the earth remained silent. O lord of the earth! He sighed, like a snake that has been flung into a pot.
9-1-046
संजयोऽप्यरुदत्तत्र दृष्ट्वा राजानमातुरम्
तथा सर्वाः स्त्रियश्चैव गान्धारी च यशस्विनी
On seeing that the king was so distressed, Sañjaya also wept. For a long time, so did all the women and the illustrious Gāndhārī.
9-1-047
ततो दीर्घेण कालेन विदुरं वाक्यमब्रवीत्
धृतराष्ट्रो नरव्याघ्रो मुह्यमानो मुहुर्मुहुः
After repeatedly losing his senses, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, tiger among men, spoke these words to Vidūra.
9-1-048
गच्छन्तु योषितः सर्वा गान्धारी च यशस्विनी
तथेमे सुहृदः सर्वे भ्रश्यते मे मनो भृशम्
"Let all the women, and the illustrious Gāndhārī, depart, and all these well-wishers. My mind is greatly distracted."
9-1-049
एवमुक्तस्ततः क्षत्ता ताः स्त्रियो भरतर्षभ
विसर्जयामास शनैर्वेपमानः पुनः पुनः
O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Having heard these words, Vidūra trembled repeatedly and gently asked the women to leave.
9-1-050
निश्चक्रमुस्ततः सर्वास्ताः स्त्रियो भरतर्षभ
सुहृदश्च ततः सर्वे दृष्ट्वा राजानमातुरम्
O bull among the Bhārata lineage! On seeing that the king was distressed, all the women and all the well-wishers departed.
9-1-051
ततो नरपतिं तत्र लब्धसंज्ञं परंतप
अवेक्ष्य संजयो दीनो रोदमानं भृशातुरम्
O scorcher of enemies! The king regained his senses and wept in great grief. The distressed Sañjaya looked at him.
9-1-052
प्राञ्जलिर्निःश्वसन्तं च तं नरेन्द्रं मुहुर्मुहुः
समाश्वासयत क्षत्ता वचसा मधुरेण च
The lord of men was sighing repeatedly. Kshatta joined his hands in salutation and comforted him with gentle words.
