18-1-001
जनमेजय उवाच
स्वर्गं त्रिविष्टपं प्राप्य मम पूर्वपितामहाः
पाण्डवा धार्तराष्ट्राश्च कानि स्थानानि भेजिरे
Janamejaya said, "My great grandfathers obtained heaven, the abode of the gods. What regions did the sons of Pāṇḍu and the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra obtain?
18-1-002
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं सर्वविच्चासि मे मतः
महर्षिणाभ्यनुज्ञातो व्यासेनाद्भुतकर्मणा
I wish to hear about this. It is my view that you know everything. You have obtained the permission of maharṣi Vyāsa, who was wonderful in his deeds.
18-1-003
वैशंपायन उवाच
स्वर्गं त्रिविष्टपं प्राप्य तव पूर्वपितामहाः
युधिष्ठिरप्रभृतयो यदकुर्वत तच्छृणु
Vaiśampāyana replied, "Your great-grandfathers, Yudhiṣṭhira and the others, obtained heaven, the abode of the gods. Listen to what they did.
18-1-004
स्वर्गं त्रिविष्टपं प्राप्य धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः
दुर्योधनं श्रिया जुष्टं ददर्शासीनमासने
Having reached heaven, the abode of the gods, Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira saw Duryodhana seated on a seat, blazing in prosperity.
18-1-005
भ्राजमानमिवादित्यं वीरलक्ष्म्याभिसंवृतम्
देवैर्भ्राजिष्णुभिः साध्यैः सहितं पुण्यकर्मभिः
He was as resplendent as the sun and was covered with auspicious marks that distinguish heroes. He was with other shining gods and sadhyas, the performers of auspicious deeds.
18-1-006
ततो युधिष्ठिरो दृष्ट्वा दुर्योधनममर्षितः
सहसा संनिवृत्तोऽभूच्छ्रियं दृष्ट्वा सुयोधने
On seeing Duryodhana, Yudhiṣṭhira was filled with intolerance. Having seen Suyodhana's prosperity, he violently retreated and spoke these words.
18-1-007
ब्रुवन्नुच्चैर्वचस्तान्वै नाहं दुर्योधनेन वै
सहितः कामये लोकाँल्लुब्धेनादीर्घदर्शिना
"I do not desire to be with Duryodhana. He lacked far-sightedness and was greedy for the worlds.
18-1-008
यत्कृते पृथिवी सर्वा सुहृदो बान्धवास्तथा
हतास्माभिः प्रसह्याजौ क्लिष्टैः पूर्वं महावने
It was because of him that we had to kill all the well-wishers and relatives on earth. Earlier, he had made us suffer in the great forest.
18-1-009
द्रौपदी च सभामध्ये पाञ्चाली धर्मचारिणी
परिक्लिष्टानवद्याङ्गी पत्नी नो गुरुसंनिधौ
Our wife, Pāñcālī, was devoted to dharma and without a blemish in her limbs. In the presence of our elders, he oppressed Draupadī in the midst of the assembly hall.
18-1-010
स्वस्ति देवा न मे कामः सुयोधनमुदीक्षितुम्
तत्राहं गन्तुमिच्छामि यत्र ते भ्रातरो मम
O gods! Grant me peace. I do not even wish to see Suyodhana. I wish to go to the region where my brothers are."
18-1-011
मैवमित्यब्रवीत्तं तु नारदः प्रहसन्निव
स्वर्गे निवासो राजेन्द्र विरुद्धं चापि नश्यति
Nārada laughed and replied, "It is not like that. O Indra among kings! For those who reside in heaven, all enmity is destroyed.
18-1-012
युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो मैवं वोचः कथंचन
दुर्योधनं प्रति नृपं शृणु चेदं वचो मम
O Yudhiṣṭhira! O mighty-armed one! Do not speak in this way about King Duryodhana. Listen to my words.
18-1-013
एष दुर्योधनो राजा पूज्यते त्रिदशैः सह
सद्भिश्च राजप्रवरैर्य इमे स्वर्गवासिनः
This King Duryodhana is worshipped, together with the gods, by the virtuous ones, the best among kings and all those who reside in heaven.
18-1-014
वीरलोकगतिं प्राप्तो युद्धे हुत्वात्मनस्तनुम्
यूयं सर्वे सुरसमा येन युद्धे समासिताः
Having offered his own body as an oblation in the battle, he has obtained the world meant for heroes. All of you were the equals of the gods and encountered him in the battle.
18-1-015
स एष क्षत्रधर्मेण स्थानमेतदवाप्तवान्
भये महति योऽभीतो बभूव पृथिवीपतिः
By practising the dharma of kshatriyas, he has obtained this region. Confronted with great fear, this lord of the earth was not terrified.
18-1-016
न तन्मनसि कर्तव्यं पुत्र यद्द्यूतकारितम्
द्रौपद्याश्च परिक्लेशं न चिन्तयितुमर्हसि
O son! You should no longer remember what occurred in the course of the gambling match. You should not think about Draupadī's affliction.
18-1-017
ये चान्येऽपि परिक्लेशा युष्माकं द्यूतकारिताः
संग्रामेष्वथ वान्यत्र न तान्संस्मर्तुमर्हसि
Nor should you remember the hardships others caused at the time of the gambling match. Nor should you remember what happened elsewhere, in the course of the battle.
18-1-018
समागच्छ यथान्यायं राज्ञा दुर्योधनेन वै
स्वर्गोऽयं नेह वैराणि भवन्ति मनुजाधिप
You should follow propriety and meet King Duryodhana. O lord of men! There is no enmity in heaven.
18-1-019
नारदेनैवमुक्तस्तु कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः
भ्रातॄन्पप्रच्छ मेधावी वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह
Having been addressed by Nārada, the intelligent Yudhiṣṭhira, king of the Kurus, asked about his brothers and spoke these words.
18-1-020
यदि दुर्योधनस्यैते वीरलोकाः सनातनाः
अधर्मज्ञस्य पापस्य पृथिवीसुहृदद्रुहः
"Duryodhana was ignorant about dharma. He was wicked and destroyed the earth and his well-wishers. Yet, he has obtained the eternal world meant for heroes.
18-1-021
यत्कृते पृथिवी नष्टा सहया सरथद्विपा
वयं च मन्युना दग्धा वैरं प्रतिचिकीर्षवः
It is because of him that the earth was destroyed, with its horses, chariots and elephants. It is because of him that we burnt with rage and were goaded towards enmity.
18-1-022
ये ते वीरा महात्मानो भ्रातरो मे महाव्रताः
सत्यप्रतिज्ञा लोकस्य शूरा वै सत्यवादिनः
My brave brothers were great-souled and great in their vows. They were valiant and truthful in speech and abided by truthful pledges.
18-1-023
तेषामिदानीं के लोका द्रष्टुमिच्छामि तानहम्
कर्णं चैव महात्मानं कौन्तेयं सत्यसंगरम्
Which are the worlds they have obtained? I desire to see those. What about the great-souled Karṇa Kaunteya, devoted to the truth?
18-1-024
धृष्टद्युम्नं सात्यकिं च धृष्टद्युम्नस्य चात्मजान्
ये च शस्त्रैर्वधं प्राप्ताः क्षत्रधर्मेण पार्थिवाः
What about Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Sātyaki and Dhṛṣṭadyumna's sons? What worlds have been obtained by the kings who followed the dharma of kshatriyas and were slain by weapons in the battle?
18-1-025
क्व नु ते पार्थिवा ब्रह्मन्नैतान्पश्यामि नारद
विराटद्रुपदौ चैव धृष्टकेतुमुखांश्च तान्
O brāhmaṇa! O Nārada! Why don't I see those kings here? What about Virāṭa, Drupada, the foremost Dhṛṣṭaketu,
18-1-026
शिखण्डिनं च पाञ्चाल्यं द्रौपदेयांश्च सर्वशः
अभिमन्युं च दुर्धर्षं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि नारद
Pāñcāla Śikhaṇḍī, all the sons of Draupadī and the unassailable Abhimanyu? O Nārada! I wish to see them."
